EcoVert Solutions was founded by Tim Hulse, who holds an MSc in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies from the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales. Tim is a Certified Passivhaus Designer, and has recently completed a course in modelling thermal bridges using THERM. Tim also provides expert advice via the Wholebuild Website - a one-stop portal for innovative and sustainable building solutions.
Tim has an Honours degree in Electronic Engineering, is a Chartered Engineer, Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Member of the Passivhaus Trust, a Member of the AECB, the sustainable building association, and a Member of the National Self-Build Association.
Tim's Master's thesis was entitled "What are the obstacles to achieving zero carbon through building renovation in Conservation Areas and how can they be overcome?". Conservation Areas make up 20% of historic housing stock and almost 5% of total housing stock. Their 1.2 million buildings generally perform very poorly and are significant emitters of carbon. This paper documents primary research into the obstacles to improving energy efficiency in Conservation Areas.
Tim is putting into practice what he preaches, with a barn conversion in a Conservation Area near Chester in which he has used hempcrete as insulation, and an off-grid ruined barn in Snowdonia National Park which he is renovating in an environmentally friendly manner with all power generated by renewable energy (see Projects).
